Top Employer Support Recognition Announced

Two of the nation's largest vehicle makers, a major insurance company and some local government agencies are among the recipients of the 2008 secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Awards, the Defense Department announced last month.

The Freedom Award is the highest recognition the U.S. government provides to employers for "their support of employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

Guardsmen or their families nominated nine of the 15 winners. They are:

* Chrysler Motors LLC, Auburn Hills, Mich.

* City of Austin, Austin, Texas

* Lochinvar Corporation, Lebanon, Tenn.

* Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Pontiac, Mich.

* Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority, Reno, Nev.

* Robinson Transport Inc., Salina, Utah

* State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, Bloomington, Ill.

* Union Pacific Corporation, Omaha, Neb.

* Winner School District, Winner, S.D.

The remaining six recipients include:

* Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Durant, Okla.

* Coastal Windows Inc., Waipahu, Hawaii

* Dominion Resources Inc., Richmond, Va.

* Jersey City Fire Department, Jersey City, NJ.

* Oshkosh Corporation, Oshkosh, Wis.

* Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC, Winston-Salem, N.C.

A board of DoD officials and business leaders selected the recipients from among a record 2,199 nominees submitted to the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve by Guardsmen and Reservists or their families.

The awards will be presented in Washington, D.C., Sept. 18.
